Focus marking in Kikuyu

Im Kikuyu, einer in Kenia gesprochenen Bantusprache, wird Fokus systematisch durch Wortstellung markiert. In dieser Arbeit werden die verschiedenen Varianten der Markierung von Fokus in Frage-Antwortsequenzen dargestellt. Nach einem Überblick über in der Literatur vorhandene Diskussionen des Phänomens wird auf der Grundlage von mit einem Muttersprachler erhobenen Daten eine syntaktische Analyse von Fokuskonstruktionen mit der Partikel ne vorgeschlagen. Ferner werden neue Daten zur Fokussierung verschiedener Satzteile, z.B. der VP, des ganzen Satzes und des Wahrheitswerts, präsentiert. Ziel der Arbeit ist somit, die deskriptive Datenbasis zu Fokuskonstruktionen im Kikuyu zu erweitern und einen theoretischen Beitrag zu ihrer Analyse im Rahmen der generativen Grammatik zu liefern. Die Arbeit wurde im Sommer 2003 als Magisterarbeit an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Institut für deutsche Sprache und Linguistik, angenommen.In Kikuyu, a Bantu language spoken in Kenya, focus is marked systematically by means of word order. In this study, the different possibilities for marking focus in question answer sequences are presented. After an overview of the discussions of the phenomenon in the literature, a syntactic account for focus constructions with the particle ne is proposed. This account is based on original data that was gathered with a native speaker. In addition, new data on focusing different parts of the sentence, e.g. the VP, the entire sentence, or the truth-value, are presented. The aim of this study thus is to broaden the descriptive basis for focus constructions in Kikuyu and to provide a theoretical contribution to their analysis in the framework of generative grammar

Large-Scale Suppression from Stochastic Inflation

We show non-perturbatively that the power spectrum of a self-interacting scalar field in de Sitter space-time is strongly suppressed on large scales. The cut-off scale depends on the strength of the self-coupling, the number of e-folds of quasi-de Sitter evolution, and its expansion rate. Asymmetry in presupposition projection: The case of conjunction

Is the basic mechanism behind presupposition projection fundamentally asymmetric or symmetric? This is a basic question for the theory of presupposition, which also bears on broader issues concerning the source of asymmetries observed in natural language: are these simply rooted in superficial asymmetries of language use— language use unfolds in time, which we experience as fundamentally asymmetric— or can they be, at least in part, directly referenced in linguistic knowledge and representations? In this paper we aim to make progress on these questions by exploring presupposition projection across conjunction, which has typically been taken as a central piece of evidence that presupposition projection is asymmetric. As a number of authors have recently pointed out, however, whether or not this conclusion is warranted is not clear once we take into account independent issues of redundancy. Building on previous work by Chemla & Schlenker (2012) and Schwarz (2015), we approach this question experimentally by using an inference task which controls for redundancy and presupposition suspension. We find strong evidence for left-to-right filtering across conjunctions, but no evidence for right-to-left filtering, suggesting that, at least as a default, presupposition projection across conjunction is indeed asymmetric

Polarization singularities from unfolding an optical vortex through a birefringent crystal

Optical vortices (nodal lines and phase singularities) are the generic singularities of scalar optics but are unstable in vector optics. We investigate experimentally and theoretically the unfolding of a uniformly polarized optical vortex beam on propagation through a birefringent crystal and characterize the output field in terms of polarization singularities (C lines and points of circular polarization; L surfaces and lines of linear polarization). The field is described both in the 2-dimensional transverse plane, and in three dimensions, where the third is abstract, representing an optical path length propagated through the crystal. Reduzierung oder Ersatz kupferhaltiger Pflanzenschutzmittel im ökologischen Hopfenbau

In den Jahren 2010 bis 2013 wurden im Rahmen eines vierjährigen Forschungsprojektes Möglichkeiten zur Reduzierung der Kupferaufwandmenge bei der Bekämpfung des Falschen Mehltaus im ökologischen Hopfenbau gesucht. Getestet wurden Kupferhydroxide, Kupfersulfate und Kupferoxychlorid mit niedrigen Aufwandmengen (2 und 3 kg/ha und Jahr) an Reinkupfer sowie in Kombination mit Synergisten. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass mit modernen Kupferhydroxiden eine erfolgreiche Bekämpfung des Falschen Mehltaus auch mit einem reduzierten Aufwand von 3 kg/ha Kupfer möglich ist. In Kombination mit den geprüften Synergisten wurde durchwegs eine Wirkungsverbesserung erzielt. Diese Ergebnisse gelten allerdings einschränkend nur für Peronospora-tolerante Zuchtsorten, nicht für anfällige Landsorten, die im ökologischen Hopfenbau aber kaum mehr eine Rolle spielen. Die Option des völligen Verzichts auf Kupferpräparate ist im Öko-Hopfen auch zukünftig nicht in Sicht

Stochastic Inflation and Replica Field Theory

We adopt methods from statistical field theory to stochastic inflation. For the example of a free test field in de Sitter and power-law inflation, the power spectrum of long-wavelength fluctuations is computed. We study its dependence on the shape of the filter that separates long from short wavelength modes. While for filters with infinite support the phenomenon of dimensional reductions is found on large super-horizon scales, filters with compact support return a scale-invariant power spectrum in the infra-red. Features of the power spectrum, induced by the filter, decay within a few e-foldings. Thus the late-time power spectrum is independent of the filter details.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figure

Versuche zur Reduzierung kupferhaltiger Pflanzenschutzmittel im ökologischen Hopfenbau

In den Jahren 2010 und 2011 wurden im Rahmen eines noch laufenden Forschungsprojektes Versuche zur Reduzierung der Kupferaufwandmenge bei der Bekämpfung des Falschen Mehltaus im ökologischen Hopfenbau gesucht. Getestet wurden Kupferhydroxide und Kupferoxychlorid mit niedrigen Aufwandmengen (2 und 3 kg/ha) an Reinkupfer sowie in Kombination mit den drei Pflanzenstärkungsmitteln 'Herbagreen', 'Biplantol' und dem phosphonathaltigen 'Frutogard'. Die ersten Ergebnisse zeigen, dass mit modernen Kupferhydroxiden eine erfolgreiche Bekämpfung des Falschen Mehltaus auch mit einem reduzierten Aufwand von 3 kg/ha Kupfer möglich sein kann. In Kombination mit den geprüften Pflanzenstärkungsmitteln wurde sogar durchwegs eine Wirkungsverbesserung erzielt. Die besten Ergebnisse wurden mit Mi-schungen erzielt, die Frutogard enthielten; dieses Produkt wird allerdings wegen seines Phosphonatanteiles vom Öko-Hopfenbau abgelehnt. Weitere Versuche zu dieser Fragestellung werden auch 2012 durchgeführt werden

An experimental Investigation of Antipresuppositions

The aim of this paper is to assess whether inferences resulting from violating the principle Maximize Presupposition behave differently from presuppositions and implicatures in processing, thus testing predictions of theories which separate those inferences out from these more well-studied aspects of meaning (Percus 2006, Sauerland 2008). We present data from a picture selection task and a visual world eye-tracking study on the English indefinite/definite determiner. Based on the findings we argue that 1) the epistemic status of anti-uniqueness inferences is much weaker than the uniqueness presupposition of the definite or implicature raised by the indefinite, and 2) drawing these inferences requires more effort than not drawing it or calculating presuppositions or implicatures
